5 Tips on how to tune the guitar

Before we start please keep in mind that tuning a guitar can be really tricky, specially if the guitar is way out of tune. So don't get hard on yourself if you can't make it straight away.

It's natural it might take some time to learn how to do it. Just keep going, you will get there!

Here are my top 5 tips to tune your guitar if you are a beginner.

01 - Use a clip tuner or app.

Using a clip tuner might be the best option at the moment, but if you don’t have one, you can download an app for your phone.

The app listens to you when you pluck a string and tells you how you should move the tuning peg for that string.

The Fender app is my favourite, as it tells you if you should tune up or down.

If the app tells you “too flat, tune up” it means you should make the string tighter.

If the app tells you “too sharp, tune down” it means you should loose the strings.

02 - Find someone to help you if the guitar is really out of tune.

If your guitar is really out of tune it will be difficult for you to do it by yourself, this is because the app won’t recognise which string you are playing, so the best thing to do is to find someone that can tune the guitar the first time for you, so from there the app or the clip tuner will recognise the exactly string you are trying to tune and it will help you.

03 - Always tune your guitar.

If you are a beginner your ears won’t be able to tell if the strings are a bit out of tune, and guitars go easily out of tune. Practising with an untuned guitar won't do you any good, so always tune before you play, and while you are playing keep checking if the instrument is still in tune.

04 - Small turns.

Go gently on the tuning pegs, you should turn a way less than a ¼ of a turn every time you move the pegs. Go slowly and always check on your app or tuner if the string is getting closer to the right point.

05 - Practise it.

Tuning a guitar can be a bit tricky for a beginner, so you can consider that as part of your practice too. Have a go on the tuning pegs and get used to them, the more you do it the easier it will get. Keep practising and it will get easier.
